Slogans in 12 Step Recovery

12 step recovery is filled with wonderful slogans intended to help one think before their compulsion takes over and they use, medicate and/or act out. “One day at a time” asks us to slow down and think before we act. “Yeah but, makes for a big butt” is asking one to examine whether they are excusing, rationalizing or justifying using a decision like overeating, drinking or looking at porn. In lieu of acting out, it’s recommended that one develop a list of tools to go to such as picking up the phone and asking a friend for help.

There have been so many mornings when I have woken up feeling full of remorse and/or shame for over indulging the night before. Prior to recovery,  that would set me up for a horrible day.

As God is my witness, never have I woken up in the morning regretting my abstinence from the night before and/or decisions to follow my food plan and care for myself.

Even though it’s terrifying, picking up the phone and asking for help, interrupting the impulsivity to act out with food, alcohol, spending, fill in the blank, is so much more rewarding than the misery and remorse that comes from acting out.  This affirms being connected to one’s self and living from one’s highest self.

If you can relate to any of this or need any help with these issues, please reach out for some compassionate care. We are here to help.
